Among AFSCME's 1.4 million members, 52% are women. Many have
attained leadership positions throughout the union, holding
such positions as council president, director, and International
vice president. One-third of AFSCME's local union presidents
are women, and women make up almost half of all local union
officers. For over two decades, AFSCME has had an active women's
program, culminating in 1983 with the establishment of the
Women's Rights Department. The department's mission is focused
in three areas: encouraging women's leadership,
activating women's political participation,
and working on issues of particular concern to AFSCME's
women members. Our work in each of these areas is
guided by the principle that the union is strongest when all
members, both men and women, work together as equal partners
to ensure equity in the workplace and full participation in
the union.
